DVD Review:Fuzz, The sound that changed the world

In the world of effects pedals the Fuzz is one of the oldest. It's crude, simple, nasty sounding circuit is the stuff of tonal legends. Fuzz:The sound that changed the world is a documentary that delves deep into the world of pedal effects, mainly the fuzz. This documentary takes a good look at the boutique pedal world and it's ancestry.

The film talks to many boutique pedal makers as well as a few more production oriented manufacturers. They even got the reverend Billy G. (Billy Gibbons) to talk tone with them. From Paul Cochrane (Tim, Timmy overdrives) to Mike Mathews of Electro Harmonix. The stories of how each got into the pedal making business is very similar. Many started simply by trying to make their own stuff cheap because they couldn't afford new gear. Many just kept building stuff and people started buying. I personally think they could have done a whole hour with the whimsical Mathews and his tales from Russia.

The one thing this documentary does superbly is uncover the boutique pedal makers as normal every day guys. In the gear forums of the interwebz many of these builders have attained a celebrity status in the eyes of those who seek the next "IT" pedal. These guys improved on many tried and true designs but they are still just guys who want to build good pedals, nothing more.

If you're a gear nut, or just have a love for all things in the world of guitar, check out this film.
