Crate V5 Speaker replacement pictorial

Hey everyone, I finally got the replacement speaker for my Crate V5. Although the little amp is a monster on it’s own the speaker was lacking. The solution was a Celestion Tube 10 replacement speaker. I think these little amps have a ton of potential and I intend on taking mine to the limit.

I’m not sure of the specs on any other 10” speakers but if your looking to replace the speaker in your Crate V5 the Celestion Tube 10 fits. It’s a tight squeeze but it fits.

Here is a shot of the stock speaker next to the new Celestion. Notice the large difference in the size of the magnets.

Step 1 :Disassembly

SDC10265

There are two screws on each side of the amp holding the chassis in. I did this with the amp on it’s side and working one side at a time.

SDC10266

Support the chassis when removing the last screw so you don’t have the chassis fall out.

SDC10267

Carefully lift the chassis out being careful not to damage the tubes. You may have tug at it a little bit if the sides stick to the tolex on the inside of the amp. Just take your time and be gentle. (and remember to disconnect the speaker cable from the jack)

SDC10269

The last part of the disassembly is to remove the lower portion of the cab. Simply remove the screws and and pull it out.

Step 2: Replacing the speaker

SDC10271

Remove the speaker cable from the tabs on the speaker. These are a little snug so give them a tug (lightly) with a pair of needle nose pliers

SDC10272

Next remove the four screws holding the speaker in and pop the speaker out.

SDC10274

Carefully lower the new speaker in. Hold it by the edges taking care not to touch the paper cone. You don’t want to rip through this. (I’ve done this before and it sucks) Tighten up the screws until they are nice and snug. Don’t try to crank them down, you’ll strip the hole.

SDC10275

Attach the speaker cables to the tabs on the new speaker. Reinstall the chassis being careful again not to damage the tubes.

The whole project only took me about a half an hour and at the end of it the amp sounds even better than it did before. I haven’t had time to do any video of the amp with the new speaker but go check out The Tone King's demo of the amp with the stock speaker as well as with a Celestion. It’s kind of a blind test he did but I think you’ll be able to tell which one is which.

All told for about $150 you get a killer little amp with a hearty new speaker.
