Rock Anthem of The Week: June 28th

It's the end of June and summer is here. The heat is on this time of year. You try to keep cool as the thermometer peaks, check out this Rock Anthem of The Week.

Nothing screams summer more than rising temperatures and red hot rock and roll. This weeks anthem comes from a Southern California band that epitomized the image of the rock and roll lifestyle done So-Cal style.

The Rock Anthem of The Week is Aint Talkin bout love by Van Halen.

The opening riff on this song alone warrants it's legendary status. The searing ascension of the A minor chord jumpstarts the song and as the band kicks in it kicks you in the chest and makes you take notice.

The song then comes down a notch for the versus so the Diamond Dave's signature lyrical style can dazzle us. Soon enough, the song kicks into high gear again with the whole band singing "Aint talkin bout love" boldly pronouncing that this is simply a one night stand.

Eddie's guitar work on the solo, although subdued by the standards he set with the rest of the first album, capture your ear with the phased out squeal diveboming into the chorus sans lyrics. The band brings it down to almost a whisper to let Dave talk about being at the edge. Then, without warning, a punch of guitar and drums that crescendo back into the dominating chorus.

This song epitomized the Van Halen sound from the electrified guitar riff, to the clever and colorful lyrics, to the machine like rhythm section holding it down and keeping it chugging along. A truly classic Rock Anthem done by four guys from Pasadena who knew how to take it over the top.
