Friday night is here and your work is done. It's time to start the weekend fun. If rock and roll is what you seek, check out the Rock Anthem of the Week.
It's mid June. The time of year when the academic endeavors are over. The books have been trashed, and the lockers cleaned out. To kick off the summer with a bang I have chosen a rock anthem that celebrates the end of the school year.
This weeks Rock Anthem is School's out by Alice Cooper
This song resonates with everyone who ever hated school. Hell it resonated with those who even liked school. The message in this song was simple yet powerful. The scholars were no longer running the show. It was time for the youth to break free and be heard.
The song which was released on the album of the same name in 1972 not only declared the end of the school year but the end of the school all together. I doubt a song with a line about blowing up a school would get the same response in this day and age but in the early seventies it expressed an extreme rebellion against the academic establishment.
The repetitive snare through the chorus marched along with purpose. The matching guitar riff had the kind of aggressive feel that strengthened the resolve of the song. Then in a surprising twist, the voices of children singing "no more pencils, no more books..." in a serene melodic manner keeps the song from becoming overbearing and monotonous.
While Alice Cooper's career is built on shock, awe, and theatrics, this song stands out. It will remain a part of our culture as long as there are school kids with a need to break free.
