Who do you create music for

Music creation The creation of music of any kind is an art form.  Some will argue that particular types of music are more of an art form that others.  While there may be some varieties of music that are technically more challenging I’m not sure any one is more art than any other.

When you create a piece of music it has to mean something to you right?  I mean you don’t just produce music that has no meaning or feeling, or do you.  I know from my perspective there are pieces of music that I write that are a part of my soul. They come from deep within and they mean something.  I have also written short pieces for stock audio sites that are generic guitar instrumentals for production use.  They may not  be as much a part of my soul as other pieces of music but does that make them any less a work of art?

As guitar players we often want to explore boundaries.  Play the notes less chosen or find the perfect note for the phrase we are playing.  There are other instances where you may just play something completely off the wall and get a rush from that out of bounds breaking the rules feeling.  Is this any more or less creative than hunting down that perfect lick?

I guess it comes down to who and why you are making music. If you are making music for yourself then anything goes.  The rules can go out the window and you can do whatever you want.  If you are part of this camp I imagine there isn’t much expectation of masses of people jumping on board with your sonic madness.

If you create music to please lots of other people your artistic nature may be called into question.  If so many people love a piece of music whatever it is then does that diminish the artistry of the music?  I don’t think so.  I think it illustrates that music is not universal.  Music is individual.  As a guitar player and a musician it is up to you who your are going to create the music for.
