Rock anthem of the week for May 22nd

Here we are again at the end of another long week. After all the hard work is done it's time to put up your feet and take in the rock anthem of the week.

This week's anthem will take us into the Memorial Day Weekend with a slight patriotic flavor. We will raise our glasses to toast the song which documents the life of a touring rock band.

This week's rock anthem of the week is We're and American Band by Grand Funk Railroad

Released in 1973 on the album of the same name, this songs intro begins with what has become a rock staple, the cowbell. The syncopated drum beat soon breaks into a full bashing of the whole kit with the entire band kicking in at the end.

The punchy guitar and lyrics laced with debauchery grab you and pull you in. The build to the chorus has you on edge just waiting for the last chord where in unison the band declares their place in the world with "We're an American band..." This is great rock and roll for the first strike of the cowbell to the big rock ending.

The song has been covered by the likes of Poison and Autograph and remains a staple in the set list of many a cover band. So as we celebrate Memorial Day and remember those that have gone to fight the good fight, do so with pride in your country and sing it aloud, "We're and American band.."
