A while back I had written a post about whether games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band were helping kids get into guitar or steering them away. As a kid I spent many hours in my bedroom trying to work out EVH and Randy Rhoads licks. That was what helped me accomplish what I wanted to with guitar. I’m not sure pushing the little red, yellow and blue buttons in time with the same colored dot on the screen will accomplish the same thing.
Fender, Gibson, and many other manufacturers are cashing in on the craze by making controllers shaped like their flagship guitars. While it does look a little cooler to have a sunburst Fender as your game controller, it still is a game controller.
An enterprising fellow in Minnesota is taking the Guitar Hero craze to the next level. He is incorporating fingertip controls which allow you to use a more realistic guitar to play the game. Will this bridge the gap between video game and musicianship. I guess we’ll find out.
